Finland
If you have heard of Nokia, you have heard of Finland. Nokia is perhaps the biggest Finnish success story in the field of telecommunications. Geographically, the Republic of Finland is situated in the northern part of Europe. The countries and seas bordering the republic are Norway, Sweden, Russia, the Gulf of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea. There are innumerable islands along the coastline. Helsinki is the capital of Finland.
Finland has been the country of desire for both Russia and Sweden, for many centuries. After the Swedes lost control over it, the Russians took over and remained in control till the great Russian October Revolution when Finland declared independence. It was in 1919 that the Republic of Finland was established.
With the break-up of the USSR, with whom Finland had maintained a cordial trade relations, Finland ventured to do business with other western European countries after joining the European Union in 1995. Gradually the economy of Finland moved away from agriculture and forestry to industry base. Today agriculture and forestry are small contributors to the economy when compared to industrial participation. Principal industries are wood, metals, engineering, electronics and telecommunications. Agricultural products include cereals, potatoes, sugar beets and dairy products. Tourism is a sector with tremendous growth potential.
Finnish and Swedish are both official languages in Finland, though most speak Finnish. There are also Russian speaking minorities. The Lutheran National Church is the main religious organization in Finland.
Traditional Finnish cuisine includes bread, meat, fish, potatoes, vegetables and dairy products. Pastry for pies, such as meat and fish pies, is made using rye flour. Dessert pies are also a favorite.
