Estonia

This is an East European republic, with the Gulf of Finland and Gulf of Livonia, Latvia and Russia bordering the country. There are about fifteen hundred islands belonging to the Republic of Estonia. Tallinn is both the capital city and its main port. Other cities include Tartu, Narva, Parnu, Haapsalu, Viljandi, Johvi, Rakvere, Sillamae, Kuressaare, Voru, Paide and Valga.

Estonian is the name of the official language. Since the language belongs to the Finno-Ugric group of languages, it has nothing in common with the neighboring languages like Russian, Latvian and Swedish. It is common though with Finnish and Hungarian languages. Estonia does not have a state church and the majority of Estonians are Lutheran. This has been in existence since the Reformation in the early sixteenth century. There are about 10000 Muslims and a small Buddhist and Jewish community in Estonia.

Estonia became independent when the USSR broke up in the 1990s. After independence, Estonia has followed a policy of co-operation with countries of Western Europe. It is a member of the European Union. Estonia has implemented the policy of privatization of public sector much to its advantage. One of its biggest contributors in the growth of economy is the electronics and telecommunications sectors. Service sectors like banking, finance and other business services have shown a healthy growth. Major industries are engineering, shipbuilding, timber, furniture, paper, textiles and processed food. Though agricultural contribution is small, the products are potatoes, cereals, vegetables, fruit, livestock and dairy products. Estonia also has a fish farming industry as well as a fishing fleet, since the country has a number of rivers - the longest are Vohandu (162 km), Parnu (144 km) and Poltsamaa (135 km).

Traditional Estonian cuisine includes porridge, soups, stews, casseroles, black pudding, sauerkraut (mulgikapsad), dark rye bread, preserves and pickles. Main meals would normally have meat (chicken, pork, lamb, veal or beef) or fish (eel, cod, herring, plaice and salmon) with vegetables.
