The country has a peninsula called the Jutland and islands like Zealand, Fyn and Bornholm are all part of Denmark. Though Greenland, one of the world’s largest islands, has a government of its own, it is still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Copenhagen is the capital city of Denmark. Like most industrialized countries of the world, Denmark also has its water and air pollution problems. The government has implemented several pollution-control programs and encourages wind power as an alternate source of energy. Cycling is promoted widely as an alternate form of transportation in lieu of cars and motorbikes.
While timber was the traditional material used to build homes, the use of brick and mortar reached Denmark towards the 12th century. There are several buildings and monuments identified in the world heritage list, for its style of architecture:
The Gothic style Roskilde Cathedral, was the first Scandinavian cathedral constructed with bricks.
The Royal castle of Kronborg at Helsingor (Elsinore), built in the sixteenth century.
Today architectural styles adapted in Denmark are a mixture of the traditional with the new. The land is full of beautiful castles and cathedrals. The most famous building designed by a Danish architect is Jorn Utzon's Sydney Opera House.
People in Denmark mostly speak the Danish language. Evangelical Lutheran is the main religion. Denmark is famous through out the world for the typical Danish pastries, open sandwiches (smorrebrod) and meatballs.
Denmark is very strong economically. More so, after joining the European Union, the country has benefited in terms of trading.
