Croatia
If you have watched World Cup Football or the Wimbledon tournament, then the name of Croatia is familiar to you. Football is one of the most popular sports in Croatia, and the country won the third place in the 1998 World Cup in France. Undoubtedly, Croatia is amongst the most important football teams of Europe. Many Croatian football stars, such as Zvonimir Boban, Alen Boksic and Davor Suker, play for other European teams. Baketball and tennis are other popular sports played in Croatia. In fact,Goran Ivanisevic became the Wimbledon tennis champion, in 2001.
The Republic of Croatia has a long coast line along the Adriatic Sea. The European country is bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. The country includes over a thousand islands in its territory. Zagreb is Croatia's capital city.
During the break-up of the socialist Yugoslav countries, Croatia had suffered massive set-backs in terms of damage to its infrastructure, etc. Gradually, through privatization moves, the country has recovered and now has revived and rebuilt its bridges, factories and homes. The important Croatian industries which generate income for the country are oil , plastics, chemicals, machine tools, electronics, metal products, paper, wood products, construction materials, textiles, shipbuilding, food processing and beverages. Croatia is rich in agricultural products also. These include corn, wheat, barley, alfalfa, soybeans, sugar beets, sunflower seeds, olives, citrus fruits, etc. The Croatian tourist industry is over a hundred years old. While the Yugoslavia break-up caused some damage to the tourism industry, it has again revamped and is now receiving around three million tourists a year.
Croatia consists of Croats and some minorities like Serbs, Slovenians, Bosniaks, Hungarians and Czechs. People speak Croatian, which is the official language.
Sea foods and meat dishes such as cevapcici (sausage-shaped minced meat), raznijici (grilled meat on skewers), sarma (minced rice and meat rolled in cabbage leaves) djuvec (stew), make the traditional Croatian meal. The accompaniments are usually bread and salad. Palacinke (pancakes) are a favorite dessert.
Two of the popular drinks are slivovica (plum brandy) and Turkish coffee.
