Known world wide for music, especially the Vienna Boys' Choir and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Austrian musicians have made the country proud. Famous names include: Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) and Johann Strauss (1804-1849) among others.

Then in 1955 the countries withdrew and the State Treaty of Austria declared that the country was ‘permanently neutral”.
There are three official languages in Austria. German is Austria's official language nationwide. Slovene is the official language in Carinthia and Croatian and Hungarian are official languages in Burgenland. Most of the people are Roman Catholic. Austrian cuisine mainly consists of dumplings, boiled beef and cured ham. Desserts and pastries are popular. National favorites are apfelstrudel and chocolate cake. Traditional alcoholic drinks are beer, wine, cherry liqueur and schnapps.
The Republic of Austria joined the European Union in January 1995 at the same time as Finland and Sweden. The country is an economically strong European partner with its population enjoying a high standard of living.
