Andorra
This is a small country which is situated in the Pyrenees Mountains, sandwiched between France and Spain in the western part of Europe. The country has a rugged charm about it and has strongly Spanish influences. Andorra la Vella is the name of the capital city of this tiny and nearly-hidden country whose land area is only 468 square kilo meters. It has the highest life expectancy in the world (83.5 years!)
Since the 13th century, there are two people heading the state of Andorra. Hence it is called a co-principality. One is the President of France, and the other is Spain’s Bishop of La Seu d'Urgell – a town situated in the south of Andorra. Since 1993, the country is run by a democratic parliament, which allows limited powers to the two heads of state. During the Second World War, Andorra id not align with any particular country and served as a good route for smuggling between Spain and France.
The economy of Andorra relies primarily on tourism, which contributes nearly 80% towards the GDP. Other occupations are cattle raising, timber cultivation and international banking, which flourishes due to the current tax status prevailing in the country. No wonder then that Andorra is also called Europe’s No. 1 tax haven. Tourists from all over the world are attracted to this country for its duty-free status as well as its magnificent summer and winter resorts. The agricultural produce includes rye, wheat, barley and oats. Raising and breeding of sheep is common occupation. The chief items of export in Andorra are tobacco products and furniture. The currency of Andorra is Euro. The country was somewhat isolated from mainstream history of Europe, till about 1993, when it became a member of the United Nations. Tourism and the recent development of infrastructure and communication, has given the country the necessary push to come in the forefront of the world.
The languages used in 100% literate country Andorra are Catalan, French and Spanish. You can also find the presence of Portuguese here. The majority of the people are Catholics. The long history associated with Andorra has resulted in an abundance of folk lore and folk culture, which draw influences from Andalusia in the south to the Netherlands in the north. The culture of Andorra is essentially Spanish.
Before 1999, Andorra had no currency of its own and used the neighboring currencies - pesetas and francs. Now the uniform currency is the euro.
