Albania
Albania is a republic, located in the southern part of eastern Europe. It is a small country with two seas bordering it - the Adriatic Sea and Ionian Sea. Its neighboring countries are Montenegro, Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Greece. The capital city of Albania is Tirana.
In the olden days, Albania was known as Illyria, because of the Illyrian tribes living in the area. Many bloody wars have been fought on the soil of Albania. One of the longest ruler of Albania was the Ottomans, who ruled Albania for nearly four hundred years. After the Balkans wars were over in 1913, Albania earned its independence. During the Second World War Albania was attacked by Italy. In the post-war era, Albania became a communist state, aligning itself to USSR and becoming a member of the Warsaw pact. Later Albania shifted its allegiance to China. The country went through a lot of changes since the fall of communism in the ‘90s.
Albania is known to the world mainly because of its natural scenic beauty. The gorgeous mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes are a visual paradise. While Lake Shkoda is the largest lake in Albania, Lake Ohrid, shared with Macedonia, is one of Europe's deepest lakes. The Drini is the main river in Albania.
The Ottoman rule in Albania has left a lot of memories with its many Turkish buildings including fortresses, mosques, public baths, bridges and aqueducts. You could see them in Berat and Gjirokastra. The latter belongs to the World Heritage List.
Albania is focused on promoting tourism along with its rich heritage in culture and history. While the country benefits from the money sent by its citizens working abroad, agriculture contributes significantly towards the country’s economy. Agricultural products include wheat, corn, potatoes, vegetables, sugar beets, apples, pears, citrus fruits, grapes, nuts, meat and dairy products. Primary industries are hydropower, oil, mining, lumber, metals, cement, chemicals and food processing.
The language used in Albania is Albanian. Majority of people are Muslims while some are Albanian Orthodox. There is a minority of Roman Catholics as well.
Traditional Albanian cuisine is made up of soups, stews, bread, dairy products and vegetables. Meat is roasted, fried and grilled.
