It took a revolution in 1962 which led to the foundation of the Yemen Arab Republic or the North Yemen. After the British withdrew from the territory consisting of Aden and the former Protectorate of South Arabia in 1967, South Yemen was formed in 1967. Later, South Yemen changed its name to the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. Then in 1990 the Yemen Arab Republic and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen united to form the Republic of Yemen.
The Republic of Yemen, a middle-eastern country is bordered by the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Sanaa is the capital. Other important cities are Aden, Hodeida, al-Mukalla and Taiz.
Sanaa and Zabid and the walled city of Shibam are World Heritage sites. The city of Sanaa, situated in a mountain valley, has many mosques, hammams and multi-storey tower houses. Zabid, which was the capital of medieval Yemen, was a centre of learning. The University of Zabid was a centre of religion, history and poetry. Zabid provided education to students all over the Islamic world. Shibam is known for its multi-storied urban architectural styles and called as Chicago of the Desert or Manhattan of the Desert.
Arabic is the official language and Islam is the main religion.
The Yemeni national dish is spiced meat stew, which include beans, chickpeas and lentils. Rice with lamb is a favorite meal in Yemen. Bread is made using either sorghum, barley or wheat. Vegetables found are aubergines, carrots, garlic, okra, onions, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, spinach and squash. Fruits available are apples, bananas, citrus fruits, dates, figs, grapes, mangoes, melons, papayas, peaches and pomegranates. Tea is popular which is flavored with mint or milk. Coffee is often flavored with spices.
