Vietnam
The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a Southeast Asian country, bordered by Cambodia, Laos, China, the Gulf of Tonkin, the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Hanoi, in the north, is its capital city and Ho Chi Minh City, in the south, is the largest city in the country.
Vietnam remained independent for hundreds of years until French colonisation in the nineteenth century. French rule lasted until the mid twentieth century, apart from Japanese occupation during the Second World War.
Vietnam was an independent country till French colonization in the 19th century. Ho Chi Minh, an eminent communist leader declared a democratic republic in 1945 in Hanoi. To bring peace in the region, peace talks were held in Geneva, which divided the country into North and South Vietnam. America got involved in the Vietnam War while extending support and aid to South Vietnam and bombing raids in the North. After the loss of many lives, ceasefire was declared in 1973. Then in 1975, the North Vietnamese troops took over the entire Vietnam, uniting the two and establishing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. According the World Bank, more than half of the population in Vietnam lived in poverty, till ten years ago. But during the last nine years, the scenario has changed for the better. The country became a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations which gave the country the leverage of free trade. The US also lifted its embargo on trade with Vietnam. Presently, Vietnam is considered as the fastest growing economies in Asia.
The agricultural sector remained a major employer producing rice, corn, potatoes, soybeans, coffee, tea, sugar, bananas, rubber, poultry, pork and fish. Consequently, food processing is an important industry. Other industries include mining, cement, oil, coal, steel, machine-building, chemical fertilizer, paper, clothes and shoes. Vietnam is also a popular tourist destination, especially tourists from China and Japan.
While Vietnamese is the official language, English is increasingly getting popular as a second language. Buddhism (fused with Confucianism and Taoism) is the major religion in Vietnam. Hoa Hao and Cao Daism are indigenous religions followed in Vietnam along with Christianity and Islam.
Rice is the staple food in Vietnam. Soup with rice noodles is a national dish.
