The Republic of Uzbekistan is situated in Central Asia and is bordered by Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Tashkent is the capital city.
Uzbekistan is famous throughout the world for its ancient cities Bukhara, Khiva and Samarkand, which are over two and a half thousand years old. The cities were important centers of commerce and learning. At the end of 1991, when the USSR was dissolved, Uzbekistan became independent.
The Agriculture sector is the largest provider of employment in the country. Uzbekistan is one of the world's largest cotton producers. Other agricultural products include grain, vegetables, grapes, melons and tobacco. The country is blessed with a lot of natural resources. Major exports are oil, natural gas and gold. There are also supplies of coal, silver, copper, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium and zinc. Industries include chemicals, metallurgy, machine building, textiles and food processing. Tourism has been identified as one of the sectors which need more attention and thus a priority for the government.
While Uzbek is the official language, Russian and Tajik are spoken by some of the population. Majority of the people are Muslims.
Traditional cuisine in Uzbekistan includes bread, rice, stews and thick soups, served with noodles or dumplings. Other popular dishes are meat pastries and shashlik (mutton or liver cooked on skewers). Meat is cooked with garlic, spices and vegetables like aubergines, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, onions, peas, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins and tomatoes. Pilav, is a favorite in Uzbekistan. Apples, cherries, dates, grapes, melons, pomegranates and nuts are available in plenty.
Tea (green and black) is usually served without milk or sugar. Wine and vodka are also available.
