When Britain decided to withdraw from the region in 1968, six Gulf States, Abu Dhabi, Ajam, Dubai, Fujairah, Sharjah and Umm-al-Qaiwain joined together to form the United Arab Emirates or UAE in 1971. Ras al-Khaimah joined the federation a few months later. The Emirates are located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula and bordered by Saudi Arabia, Oman and the Arabian Gulf. The capital city is Abu Dhabi. The country consists of deserts, oases, mountains and a long coastline including many islands.
One of the richest countries in the world, revenues from oil and gas have been the mainstay of economy of UAE. Efforts are on the way to reduce the dependence on these two items and finance and insurance have become significant contributors to the economy in recent times. The country has world class infrastructure in terms of roads, ports, airports and telecommunications. Ras al-Khaimah, in particular, has an economy mainly based on agriculture (vegetables and citrus fruit). Dates and watermelons are also grown. Traditional industries of UAE are weaving, pottery and perfume-making. Tourism is an increasingly significant contributor to the economy.

Arabic is the official language of the UAE and English is used as a second language in business. Languages like Farsi, Urdu and Hindi are also spoken. The UAE is a Islamic country.
An UAE meal would usually begin with houmous, tahini or stuffed vine leaves. Pitta bread and rice often accompanies the main course which may consist of chicken, lamb or fish. Dried lime and spice mixtures are used often in their recipes.
