Taiwan
Taiwan is an island which lies close to the mainland of China. Over sixty other small islands (the Pescadores) of which twenty are inhabited also belong to Taiwan. The capital city of Taiwan is Taipei. Kaohsiung is the second largest city in Taiwan and the island's most important port. It is also one of the biggest container ports in the world.
The people of Taiwan are led by one of the three Chinese traditional beliefs: the teachings of Confucius, Taoism and Buddhism. There are some minority Christians and other religious groups.

Tourism is an important source of foreign currency.
The official language is Mandarin, though Taiwanese, a dialect of Fukien, is used by a lot of people. Hakka dialects and indigenous languages are also spoken. English is widely used in business.
Taiwanese cuisine is influenced by Fukien in southern China, which is also the place of origin of most of the population. Seafood is a particular specialty of Taiwan. The subtropical climate ensures a ready supply of fruit. Tea is the main drink: black tea, green tea and oolong are the most popular varieties. Wine is made from plums as well as grapes.
