Tadjikstan or Tajikistan
After the country broke away from the USSR and became independent, there was a long civil war which lasted nearly 5 years. During this time the country was helped by Russia and Uzbekistan and also the International Monetary Fund.
While the country has traditionally depended on agriculture for its economy, the industrial and service sector today contributes more. Agriculture however provides significant employment opportunities to the people. Cotton is the most important crop produced for export. Other agricultural products which grow in this mountainous terrain are grain, vegetables and fruits: apricots, grapes, lemons and melons. Hydropower and aluminum are the country’s significant resources. Industries include mining, chemicals, fertilizers, cement, machine tools, refrigerators and freezers, textiles and food processing.
The Republic of Tajikistan is located in Central Asia and is bordered by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. Dushanbe is the capital city.
Though Tajik is the official language of this country, Russian is widely used in business and government. Majority of the people are Muslims.
Bread, rice, stews and thick soups (sometimes served with noodles or dumplings) make up for the traditional cuisine of this country. Shashlik, mutton cooked over a grill on skewers, is another popular meal, which is eaten in a lot of parts of the world. Pilav is a favorite main dish that contains mutton, onions, carrots or turnips, garlic and rice. The Tajikistan diet will necessarily have yoghurt and milk as part of the diet.
Tajikistan is an old country. It has cities that are over two and a half thousand years old. The old world charm is evident in many ancient cities including Ustrashana (Istaravshan), Penjikent and Khodjand. Khodjand was an important centre on the Silk Road, once upon a time, a major trading route between Europe and China.
