Syria

The Middle Eastern country of The Syrian Arab Republic is bordered by Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. Damascus is Syria's capital city. The years following independence, there are a number of military coups and complete political unrest. In 1990 Syria joined the US led war against Iraq.

People in Syria are employed in agriculture as well as industry in equal proportions. The service sector though employs the highest number of people in the country. Agricultural products are wheat, barley, lentils, chickpeas, sugar beets, olives, citrus fruits, pears, melons, and grapes. Industries include petroleum, phosphate mining, textiles, food processing, beverages and tobacco. Tourism is under renewed focus in the country as it has a lot to offer for the foreigner in terms of historic sites.

Arabic is the official language in Syria and the majority of the people are Muslims.

"Mezze" which consists of a number of small dishes, are served before the main meal in Syria. Examples are salad and herbs (especially mint and parsley), nuts, vegetables, and dips. Main meals include chicken, lamb and fish. Lamb is sometimes minced or served as kebabs. Flat bread, rice and bulgar are staple foods. Bulgar wheat is an important ingredient used in a variety of recipes. Many vegetables including aubergines, beans, carrots, chickpeas, etc are available in Syria.
