The island of The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, south of the Indian subcontinent. While Colombo is the main city, Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte is the administrative capital of the island, situated very close to Colombo. Sri Lanka is a small equatorial island. It has a variety of landscapes including plains, mountains, plateaus, coastline, rivers, lagoons and rainforests. With over seventy protected areas in the small island, it is the home to many rare trees. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a tropical rainforest, is a World Heritage site.
During the British rule, which lasted from the beginning of the 19th century till 1948, the island was known as Ceylon. The country got its new name in 1972. During the ‘80s, there was a lot of warfare between the majority Sinhalese population and the Tamil separatist groups, till Norway acted as a mediator for peace negotiations in 2001. though Sri Lanka is traditionally an agro-based economy, industry now has taken over agriculture in terms of contribution to national economy. Rice and tea are two of the most important crops grown in the island. The country is also famous for its spices, such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom. Other crops are grains, sugarcane, pulses, oilseed and coconuts. Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens are kept. Fishing is an important industry. Other industries are food processing, clothing, textiles, petroleum refining, cement and rubber processing. Telecommunications, insurance and banking are growing industries. Tourism is a priority for the country.
It is estimated that over eight hundred thousand Sri Lankans work in other countries, mainly in the Middle East. Money remitted from citizens working abroad is another important source of revenue for the government.
While Sinhalese and Tamil are official languages, English is a popular language too. Majority of the population is Buddhist. Other religions are Hindu, Christian and Muslim.
Home grown spices and vegetables like black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, turmeric, chilies, garlic, onions, peppers and tomatoes make a typical meal in Sri Lanka. Coconut milk is also an important ingredient in cooking. Curries are often eaten with flat bread called roti. While tea is the national drink, arrack is the local alcoholic drink.
