South Korea

The Republic of Korea (South Korea) is situated in Eastern Asia. Japan is on its east. Its land border is with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The Yellow Sea and East Sea, also known as the "Sea of Japan" are its coastal borders. The volcanic island of Cheju is Korea's largest island. Seoul is Korea's capital city.

After the Second World War, the Korean Peninsula was divided into two regions – the North which was occupied by the Russians and the South which was occupied by the Americans. While North Korea became The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, South Korea became known as Republic of Korea.

Korea’s economic history is one of revival. After initial set backs, the country is back on track. Only a little over a quarter of the population is employed in industry, which include steel, shipbuilding, automobile production, electronics, chemicals and telecommunications. A small percentage of the population is engaged in agriculture. Products are rice, barley, root crops, vegetables, ginseng and fruit. Chickens, pigs and cattle are reared. Korea's fishing industry includes fish farms. The service sector is the largest employment provider in the country. The IT and tourism industries are contributing significantly to the national economy.

While Korean is the official language, English is taught in schools. One fourth of the population are Christians while the remaining are either Buddhists or followers of Confucianism.

There are various cooking methods used in Korean cooking. Food can be steamed, stir-fried, grilled or barbecued. Fish may be eaten raw. Seasonings are important and people mostly use soy sauce, soybean paste (doenjang) and red pepper paste (gochujang). Fermented foods, such as kimchi, are popular. Soups and stews are eaten regularly. Beef, chicken, pork, fish and seafood are combined with rice, noodles, and vegetables such as beans, bean-sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, mushrooms, onions, peppers, potatoes and spinach.
