The Republic of Singapore is made up of the island of Singapore along with sixty smaller islands of which just over twenty are inhabited. A causeway links Singapore to the southern tip of the Malaysian Peninsula. The main island of Singapore is about twenty-six miles wide and stretches around fourteen miles from north to south. Singapore City is the country's capital.

Between 1965 and 1977, Singapore became known as one of the wealthiest ‘Asian Tigers’ in terms of a flourishing economy.
With one of the busiest ports and airports in the world Singapore is a major centre for oil refining and ship repairing. Its financial and business services sectors of the economy have become the largest contributors to its economy. The electronics industry is the most important part of the manufacturing sector. The country is linked internationally by submarine cables and satellite stations. Since the land area of Singapore is very small, agriculture has never been very important to Singapore’s economy. Food is imported and fishing is important. Tourism also plays a major part in the economy of the country.
The majority of the population is Chinese with a minority of Malays. Languages used are Mandarin, English, Malay and Tamil. Hokkien, Cantonese and Teochew are also spoken. Singapore has a number of religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Confucianism, Christianity, Taoism, Judaism and Sikhism are all practiced in the country.
Singapore's multicultural identity is evident from its food. Influences of China, India, Malaysia and Indonesia are found in nearly all the dishes. As an island, seafood (crayfish, lobster, prawns, squid, tuna, sea bass and snapper) is an important part of the diet. Chilly crab is regarded as the national dish. Singapore is famous for its roadside hawkers, who sell a variety of local foods.
