The Seychelles is famous for its diving sites. People indulge in numerous water sports including swimming, snorkeling, surfing and sailing. The Seychelles is also known through out the world for big game fishing and visitors can fish for barracuda, dorado, marlin, sailfish, tuna and shark.
There are one hundred and fifteen islands all of which make up The Republic of Seychelles, located in the Indian Ocean, over one and a half thousand kilometers east of the Africa. The main islands are Mahé, Praslin and La Digue. Victoria, on Mahé, is the capital. Forty-three of the Inner Islands are granite based while the remaining two Inner Islands and the seventy-two Outer Islands are based on coral reefs.
A lot of French and British colonial style can be seen in the architecture of buildings in the country, especially in its capital. There are many ethnic groups living in this country which include French, African, Indian, Chinese and Arab. Though English is the official language, majority of the people speak Creole. Mostly people are Christians. Food is influenced by the many ethnic groups who stay in the islands; from Indian curry to Chinese noodles and Creole stew. Coconut milk is used in a number of recipes. Salted dried fish is another popular use of fish.
After gaining independence in 1976, tourism gave a boost to the economy of the country. The government is however keen on reducing its dependence on this sector and now looking at the growth of industries like farming and fishing. Industries include coir rope made from fiber of coconut, boat building, furniture, printing, food processing and beverages. Agricultural products are cinnamon, vanilla, bananas, coconuts, cassava and sweet potatoes. Chickens are reared. Tuna fishing has also started to contribute favorably towards the economy.
There are a number of areas in Seychelles which are designated as protected reserves and parks. For a tourist, the must-see includes St Anne Marine National Park and Morne Seychellois National Park.
