Qatar

The State of Qatar is made up of some small islands and a small peninsula. It is bordered by the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia. Doha is the capital city and a major port. The country has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Dust storms and sandstorms are frequent and natural hazards.

You will get to see a mixture of traditional buildings and modern structures when you are in Qatar. For instance, the fishing centre of Al-Wakrah is especially known for its old fort which has now been converted into a museum. Since the State of Qatar has benefited substantially from oil and gas revenues, many modern hotels, offices and public buildings have been constructed in Doha.

There have been numerous treaties signed with the British before Qatar became a British Protectorate. Oil was discovered in the country in 1939, and in the 1950s and 60s, Qatar became one of the most important oil producing countries of the world. After the British withdrew from the Gulf in 1971, Qatar gained independence. Since then, the rulers of Qatar have been from the Al Thani family, the traditional rulers in Qatar since the mid nineteenth century.

Revenues from oil and gas have been the two most important revenue earners of the country. Presently efforts are being made to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and gas and diversify the economy. Other industries include the development of offshore natural gas reserves and the production of fertilizers and steel. In the agriculture sector, the government is focused on the usage of modern technology and to protect and develop the fishing sector.

While Arabic is the official language, many speak English. Majority of the people of Qatar are Muslims.

A typical meal in Qatar starts with appetizers such as olives and houmous. Bread, including pitta bread, rice or bulgar wheat often accompanies the main course which may consist of fish, chicken, lamb or mutton and vegetables. Pork is not eaten. Other foods include salad, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, dates and sweet puddings.
