The State of Qatar is made up of some small islands and a small peninsula. It is bordered by the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia. Doha is the capital city and a major port. The country has hot, humid summers and mild winters. Dust storms and sandstorms are frequent and natural hazards.

Revenues from oil and gas have been the two most important revenue earners of the country. Presently efforts are being made to reduce the country’s dependence on oil and gas and diversify the economy. Other industries include the development of offshore natural gas reserves and the production of fertilizers and steel. In the agriculture sector, the government is focused on the usage of modern technology and to protect and develop the fishing sector.
While Arabic is the official language, many speak English. Majority of the people of Qatar are Muslims.
A typical meal in Qatar starts with appetizers such as olives and houmous. Bread, including pitta bread, rice or bulgar wheat often accompanies the main course which may consist of fish, chicken, lamb or mutton and vegetables. Pork is not eaten. Other foods include salad, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, dates and sweet puddings.
