Oman
Officially known as the The Sultanate of Oman, the country lies in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Countries like United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen border it on land and the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea are its sea borders. Muscat is the capital of Oman. Though most part of the country is desert, its high mountains and extensive beaches make it very different from other Gulf countries.
You could see many modern architecture with geometric shapes and designs in Muscat. Modern architectural styles are limited to certain areas only. One of the most famous old buildings in Oman are its old forts. Bahla Fort in the Oasis at Bahla is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
While Arabic is the national language, English is used in government and business. Swahili and Urdu are among the other languages in use. Oman is an Islamic country, dominated by the Ibadhi sect with a Sunni minority. The cuisine of Oman consists of foods such as goat's meat, fish, bread and fruit. Indian food is readily available, because of the large number of Indian migrant workers.
The Omani economy is largely dependent on income from oil and gas revenues. It has helped in building the infrastructure of the country like roads, airports, ports and telecommunications including satellite earth stations as well as mosques, and houses. Agriculture plays a very small role in the economy: plants are irrigated with water from springs. Alfalfa, onions, bananas, date palms and limes are grown. Domestic livestock are camels and goats. Fish are one of Oman's main export items. Construction is an important industry offering employment to many. Other industries are steel, cement, chemicals and optic fiber. Tourism is also a recognizable contributor to the economy.
Oman was nearly isolated from the world from 1932, during the reign of Sultan Said Bin Taimur. After a coup in 1970, the Sultan's son, became Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, and took up modernization to the extent possible, after retaining the original Oman traditional characteristics.
