Industry accounts for one quarter of the national economy and include hydroelectric power, cement, brick production, jute, carpets, textiles, garments, cigarettes, sugar and oilseed milling. Due to continued politial unrest, the tourism industry has suffered major set backs.
While Nepali is the official language, various Tibetan and Indian languages are also spoken. English is used by many government officials and in business. Nepal is officially a Hindu state. Majority of the people are Hindus while some are Buddhists, and Muslims.
Religion has a major impact on food. For example, many Hindus are strict vegetarians. Rice is a staple food, often eaten with lentil soup and vegetables.
Tea is often served with milk, sugar and spices; in the mountains tea is salted with butter. Beer and spirits are produced locally.
The Kathmandu Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is considered a living museum. Examples of cultural treasures include palaces, pagodas, temples, and Buddhist stupas.
