Tourism was discouraged for many years but efforts are being made to revamp the industry.

Bagan (Pagan), in central Myanmar, is the most important architectural site in Myanmar. King Anawratha, a devout Buddhist, built the first pagoda near Bagan. His successors built so many that by the twelfth century Bagan was called the "city of four million pagodas". The Shwedagon Pagoda the most well known. Large sections of Myanmar are forested and the supplies of teak and other hardwoods are among the country's most valuable resources. Majority of the people in Myanmar live in rural areas. The population is a mixture of many ethnicities: Burmans, Shan, Karen, Rakine, Mon and some Chinese. Burmese is the main language but minorities have their own languages.

Bamboo, many types of fruit trees, palms and flowering plants such as hibiscus and rhododendrons are available in plenty in Myanmar.
