The Republic of Maldives is in Southern Asia. There are over a thousand coral islands, grouped in twenty-six major atolls, in the Indian Ocean, all of which for part of the Maldives. Vegetables grown are breadfruit, onions, pumpkins, sweet potatoes and taro. Fruits available are typical of a tropical country which includes bananas, mangoes, papayas and watermelons.
Towards the end of 1887, the Sultan of the Maldives signed a contract with the British formalizing the British Protectorate. The Maldives gained full independence in 1965 and became the Republic of Maldives in 1968.
