Lebanon
The Lebanese Republic is a Middle East country and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Syria and Israel. Beirut is the capital city and a major port. Tripoli is Lebanon's second largest city.
The Lebanese Civil War between 1975 and 1991 damaged the infrastructure and economy significantly. Helped by international finance, the government started a revival program in 1993, after which the economy showed signs of recovery. But again in 2006, hostilities between one of Lebanon's militant groups and Israel caused more damage to the country's infrastructure. Agricultural products include potatoes, vegetables, tomatoes, olives, citrus fruits, apples and grapes. Tobacco is also grown. Industries include oil refining, cement, chemicals, metal products, wood and furniture products, textiles and food processing. The service sector provides employment to a large section of the population.
Though Arabic is the official language, French and English are widely spoken. There are about seventeen religious sects in Lebanon, mostly representing the Muslim and Christian religions.
The "mezze" which consists of many small dishes of food (grains, houmous, goat's cheese, salads and vegetables) is the starter for a Lebanese meal. Regular meals usually include lamb, chicken, fish and vegetables. Stuffed vegetables are a popular feature of Lebanese cuisine. Staple foods include bread (flat varieties) and rice. Recipes may use yoghurt and nuts. Lebanese desserts are usually cakes, pastries, milk puddings, ice cream, sorbets and fresh fruit. While coffee is sometimes slightly scented, tea is served sweet with mint. Beers, wines and spirits are produced locally and arak, an aniseed-flavored spirit, is served with water.
Lebanon is famous for its glassware. Poetry has traditionally been part of Lebanese culture. Khalil Gibran is one of Lebanon's most famous poets, known worldwide.
