Laos

Formally known as the Lao People's Democratic Republic, this landlocked country lies in Southeastern Asia. It is bordered by Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), China and Vietnam. Vientiane is the capital. Other cities include Luang Prabang, Pakse and Savannakhet.

After gaining semi-autonomy within the French Union in 1950, Laos achieved full independence in 1954. This was followed by civil war between royalists and communists. Ultimately the Lao People's Front took control of the country in 1975 proclaiming the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

The economy of Laos survives on grants and benefits from International Monetary Fund and other international sources. Investments from countries like Japan are also a great help to its economy. Other contributor is agriculture. Agricultural products are rice, maize, sweet potatoes, peanuts, ginger, sugarcane, coffee, tea, cotton and tobacco. Industries include hydroelectric power, mining, construction, cement, timber, furniture, garments, agricultural processing and beverages. Tourism has also gained importance as an important source of foreign exchange.

While Lao is the official language, French, English and a number of ethnic languages are spoken as well. Most people are Buddhist, some are animist, and small numbers practice the Baha'i Faith, Christianity and Islam.

Laotian cuisine is hot and spicy. They use spices like garlic, chilly, lemon grass, coriander, lime juice, peanuts, and fermented fish sauce. Sticky rice is the staple food. Laap (finely chopped meat or fish with herbs and spices) is a popular dish. Noodle soup and spring rolls are also considered delicacies. Green papaya salad is popular. Vegetables include cabbages, carrots, cucumbers, green beans, onions, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. Fruits available in Laos are bananas, coconuts, custard apples, durians, guavas, mangoes, oranges, papayas, pineapples, starfruit, and watermelons.
