Kuwait

The State of Kuwait is in the Middle East, bordered by the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It consists of mainland and a number of islands: Auhha, Bubiyan, Failaka, Kubbar, Miskan, Umm Al-Maradim, Umm Al-Naml, Qaruh and Warba. Kuwait City is the capital. Although Kuwait is largely a flat desert plain land, it is not barren. There are many desert shrubs, such as the arfaj. The small yellow flower of the arfaj is the national flower of Kuwait.

Kuwait became an independent country after the British rule ended in 1961. In August 1990, Iraq annexed Kuwait and refused to obey UN demand to leave the country. An international military campaign, led by the United States, forced Iraqi troops out of Kuwait. A new Kuwait-Iraq border has been set by the United Nations.

Before oil was discovered, Kuwait's economy depended on commercial activities, fishing, and pearl diving. The country’s oil resources are estimated to be around 10% of world’s oil reserves. Consequently, petroleum earns about half of country’s total income. It is also a major export item. The industrial sector provides more than half of the country’s economy. Industries, other than oil, include natural gas, petrochemicals, cement, shipbuilding and repair, construction materials and food processing. Not suitable for agriculture, most food, except for fish in Kuwait is imported.

Though Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken. Majority of the people follow Islam.

Meat is a staple food in the Kuwaiti diet. Meat, chicken, and fish dishes are flavored with spices: cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, nutmeg, pepper and paprika. A traditional meal is roasted lamb stuffed with rice. Popular foods include houmous, stuffed vine leaves, and meat kebabs. A variety of desserts and fruits are eaten. Dates are a favorite fruit.
