Kazakhstan

The ninth largest country in the world, The Republic of Kazakhstan is situated in Central Asia. It is bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and the Caspian Sea. Astana is the capital city of Kazakhstan. One of the latest tourist attractions is a "pyramid for peace", a 253 ft high steel and stone structure, designed by Britain's Norman Foster. The building is portrayal of peace and is home to a cultural centre.

The country gained independence after the dissolution of USSR in 1991.

There were a lot of economic reforms after the country became independent. The agricultural sector produces wheat, barley, corn, millet, vegetables, sunflowers and mustard. Kazakhstan is particularly famous for its apples. Half of the working population is employed in the service sector. Tourism is currently one of the high priority sectors with the government.

While Kazakh is the state language, people mostly speak in Russian. Majority of the people are Muslims with a small percentage of people who are Russian Orthodox.

A large variety of breads, soups and stews make the typical meal in this country. Meat has always been the most important component of Kazakhstani cuisine. Meat dishes are prepared using lamb, mutton or beef with seasonings and vegetables. People are also very fond of fish and it is cooked using a variety of recipes.

Horse riding is a traditional sport in Kazakhstan. A variety of games are played on horseback including "wrestling on horseback" and "pick up the coin" which is performed whilst galloping at full speed.
