Jordan
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a Middle Eastern country bordered by Israel, the West Bank, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf of Aqaba. Amman is the capital city.

The history of Jordan is somewhat similar to that of its surrounding regions - wars with the European Crusaders; attacks from the Mongols; and eventually absorption into the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish conquest lasted from 1516 until the end of the First World War in 1918. After the British handed over Palestine to the United Nations in 1947, the State of Israel was founded in 1948. War followed between Israel and Arab. Thousands of Palestinian refugees fled to the West Bank and Jordan. In 1950 Jordan annexed the West Bank. Then during the six-day war in 1967, Jordan lost the West Bank to Israel. In 1994 the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan signed a formal peace treaty with the State of Israel.
Debt and unemployment are the two big economic problems faced by Jordan, though since Abdallah II became Jordan's ruler broad economic reforms have taken place. Agricultural products are wheat, barley, lentils, chick-peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, almonds, apricots, citrus fruits, figs and melons. Important industries include cement, phosphate mining, petroleum refining, light manufacturing, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, textiles and food processing. Though tourism sector has not yet fully developed, the country has a lot to offer to the international tourist - historic monuments, desert scenery and beach resorts.
Arabic is the official language and majority of the people are Muslims. The "mezze" consisting of up to thirty or more small dishes are served before the meal. Maglouba (stew) is prepared with vegetables, meat, or sometimes fish. Kebabs made with lamb and chicken are a popular meal and stuffed vegetables are a feature of Jordanian cuisine.
