Iran

Bordered by Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan-Naxcivan exclave, Azerbaijan-proper, the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, the Islamic Republic of Iran is situated in southwestern Asia. The Straits of Hormuz is a strategic waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. Tehran is the capital city. While the terrain is rugged and mountainous much of the country is desert.

In terms of the country’s oil and gas reserves, Iran is considered to represent around nine and fifteen percent of world’s net oil and gas reserves respectively. The revenues which the country earns from its petroleum products are used to build various transport and infrastructural support systems. Other than oil, industries in Iran are petrochemicals, metals, cement, construction materials, textiles, carpets and food processing. The agricultural products are rice, grains, sugar beet, pistachio nuts, walnuts, apples, bananas, citrus fruits, dates, grapes, melons, peaches, pears and cherries. Cotton is grown and wool produced. Fishing has always been important along the Iranian coasts. Nearly half of the population is employed in the service sector. Tourism has ceased to get any worthwhile revenue to the country due to its political environment.

Water supply has been a perennial problem in Iran. An example of early irrigation is preserved in Bam, which features in the World Heritage List. Today a dam on the Karun provides electricity for the country as well as water for irrigation.

The official language of Iran is Persian (Farsi). Majority of the people are Shi'a Muslim. Minorities are Sunni Muslim along with the Bahai, Christian, Jewish and Zoroastrian religions.

Bread, rice, vegetables, meat and fresh fruit make the traditional Iran cuisine. Thick soups and stews are prepared with vegetables, rice and meat (chicken, duck, lamb, beef, veal). The kebab is a favorite with Iranians. Pickles, stuffed vine leaves, feta cheese, yoghurt with cucumber and thin Iranian bread are other national favorites. Iranians drink non-alcoholic beer but alcohol is forbidden.
