The Republic of Indonesia, located in Southeastern Asia between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, consist of over thirteen thousand islands. The main islands of Indonesia include Bali, Java, Sulawesi and Sumatra. Jakarta, on the island of Java, is the capital city.
Two of Indonesia's religious buildings are on the World Heritage List. These are the Borobudur Temple Compounds and the Prambanan Temple Compounds. The temple was restored in 1975 with the help of UNESCO and the 8th century Buddhist temple was opened to public in 1983.
A number of important kingdoms were established in Indonesia for centuries: Buddhist, Hindu and Hindu-Buddhist. Arab traders introduced Islam and between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, which today has emerged as the main religion of the island. After the Portuguese left the islands in the early 16th century, the Dutch colonies settled. By the end of 18th century Indonesia was a part of the Dutch colonial empire and was called the Netherlands East Indies. During the Second World War Japan invaded the Dutch East Indies (1942). After the War Indonesia declared independence.
The service and industrial sectors are the major contributors to Indonesian economy. The main industries are petroleum, natural gas, mining, cement, chemical fertilizers, rubber, plywood, textiles, clothing, footwear and food processing. Tourism is one of the most important industries in the service sector, especially on the island of Bali. Agriculture, though contributes least to the economy, provides employment for the largest percentage of the working population.
Agricultural products include rice, cassava, peanuts, nutmeg, palm oil, copra, coffee, cocoa, meat and eggs.
Though Bahasa Indonesian is the official language, there are many local dialects. English and Dutch are also spoken. Majority of the people of Indonesia are Muslim.
Cuisines from all over the world are available in Indonesia. Rice is their staple food. It is eaten with a lot of vegetables, soybean, meat and fish. Fish is salted and dried and made into a paste. Spices, chili paste, peanut sauce and coconut milk are used in a number of recipes. Fruits and vegetables are available in Indonesia throughout the year.
