India

Unity in diversity is what some people call India. Lying on eastern side of Pakistan and south side of Tibet and China, India has a long coastline – the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal surrounding the country on west, south and eastern side. In the north the Himalaya mountain range separates it from China and Nepal. The island of Sri Lanka, once called Ceylon, lies at the southernmost tip of India. Countries which border India are Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma).

The capital is New Delhi; other major cities are Bombay (now called Mumbai), Calcutta (now called Kolkata), Madras (now called Chennai), Bangalore (now called Bangaluru) and Hyderabad. The country's longest river is the Brahmaputra; the second longest is the Ganges, regarded as Holy by many. The Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is in a city called Agra, which is close to Delhi.

World’s second most populated country, after China, India has more languages than any other country in the world. There are 23 official languages and several hundreds of other smaller languages and dialects spoken in this country. Hindi is the national language, which has met with a lot of political opposition since its adoption as a national language. There are many castes and sub-castes to which people belong. Arranged marriages are still prevalent in India where the bride and groom meet only after marriage. The marriage is fixed by the respective parents. While nearly 80% of the people are Hindus by religion, there are several other religious groups in India. The major ones are Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Sikhs, Zorastrians, Jains, etc.

After independence from British rule in 1948, India concentrated on the industrialization. Though presently it has a mixed economy, the country has a sound industrial base, is self-sufficient in food production and has a mature service sector.

Like its people, the cuisine of the country is equally varied. One particular curry can be cooked in many different ways, depending on the State of origin of the cook or the family. Many Hindus are strict vegetarians although some eat fish and chicken. The cow is sacred to Hindus around the world. Moslems do not eat any pig products. Rice, millet and bread (nan, chapattis) are staple foods. Food is flavored with many herbs and spices. Tea, which is also one of the country's major exports, is universally available. Coffee is more preferred in the southern parts of the country.
