Georgia
The republic of Georgia is situated in Southwestern Asia. It is bordered by the Black Sea, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. Tbilisi is the capital city.
Georgia had become a part of the Russian empire at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Though Georgia had become independent after the Russian Revolution, in 1922 Georgia joined the USSR together with Armenia and Azerbaijan to form the Trans-Caucasian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. Re-organization within the USSR in 1936 led to Georgia becoming the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic.
Georgia again became independent in 1991, following the dissolution of the USSR.
After independence Georgia suffered economic hardships which were triggered mostly by internal conflict. With the help of International Monetary Funds, the country gradually started to make progress from the ‘90s. The agricultural sector accounts for a minor part of the economy and the products are citrus fruits, grapes, hazelnuts, vegetables and tea. The industrial scenario is better which are engaged in
mining (manganese and copper), steel, aircraft, machine tools, electrical goods, chemicals, wood products and wine. Tourism is getting renewed focus in the country.
While Georgian is the official language, Russian, Armenian and Azeri are also spoken. Majority of the people are Orthodox Christian. Other religions include Catholic, Armenian-Gregorian and Islam.
A Georgian meal usually starts with a number of small dishes, such as salads, pickled vegetables and preserved meats. Beef, pork and poultry are very popular in the country and cooking methods can be roasting, grilling or slow cooking in a casserole. Home-grown walnuts, are used in recipes in a variety of ways. Sometimes they are added to salads and often they are used in sauces and soups. Walnuts are also sugared and eaten as a sweet. Other sweet dishes include cakes, pastries and fruits.
