Cyprus

Officially known as The Republic of Cyprus, the country is an island in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is a part of the Middle East, located south of Turkey and south-west of Syria. Nicosia, is the name of the capital city, which is located centrally on the island. Cyprus is divided by a fortified border into two sections, each inhabited by the Turkish and Greek communities.

Cyprus gained independence from the British in 1960. The country was led by a Greek, who was assisted by a Turk. Within a few years after gaining independence, there was a war between the Turks and the Greeks which called for the UN to send their peace keeping forces to the island. The island is now divided by a ‘Green Line’ which is overseen by the UN peacekeepers. Though Cyprus gained accession to the European Union, the agreement is that only the Greek southern sector will come under EU law. All Cyprus citizens are however called European citizens.

The service sector contributes maximum to the economy of the island. This includes tourism and banking. Cyprus is a rapidly growing international business and financial center of the world. Copper is one of the important natural resources in Cyprus and it has been mined for thousands of years. Other natural resources are asbestos, pyrites, gypsum, marble, clay earth pigment, timber and salt. Agriculture is important to the island’s economy and the crops grown are barley, potatoes, vegetables, olives, citrus fruits, grapes and olives. Industries are food processing, the production of fruit juice, wine and sherry, fish farming, textiles, light chemicals, metal products, wood products, cement and gypsum production, construction and ship repair and refurbishment.

Greek is the main language in the South and Turkish in the North. Many of the people speak English. Majority of the people in Cyprus are Greek Orthodox and some are Muslim. There are minorities such as Maronites.

A traditional meal in Cyprus would usually start with a meze. This consists of a number of small dishes, including Greek salad, halloumi, small meat dishes and dips such as houmous, taramosalata and tahini. Main meals would include kleftiko (roasted lamb), kebabs, moussaka, stuffed vine leaves, kalimari (squid) and fish dishes. Honey is used in pastries such as baklava and kataifi. Kafeneions are local coffee pubs where men gather to drink coffee, talk and play backgammon.
