The Kingdom of Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country. Bordered by Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand, Phnom Penh is the capital city.
The country has seen many wars and flooding during the past decades. There are many people in this kingdom who earn their living through farming. Products grown are rice, corn, cassava, beans, soybeans, sweet potatoes and cashews. Fishing is important and fish breeding and culture is practiced widely. Its industries are gem mining, rubber, cement, wood products, textiles, clothing and rice milling. Tourism is the sunshine industry in this country. The Mekong River, the largest river in Southeast Asia, flows across Cambodia, from the north to the south.
Cambodia had become involved in the Vietnam War during the late ‘60s. During the reign of Pol Pot, the country was renamed Democratic Kampuchea. When in 1978, the Vietnamese forces invaded Cambodia; the People’s Republic of Kampuchea was founded. The Vietnamese troops left Cambodia in 1989 and in 1993, monarchy was restored in the country and it came to be known as the Kingdom of Cambodia.
While Cambodia's wooden architectural styles have disappeared with time, the country has one of the most important Archaeological Parks in Southeast Asia - Angkor Wat. Khmer is the official language and majority of the people are Buddhist. Rice and fish are part of the staple diet in Cambodia. Many herbs and spices like coriander, ginger, lemon grass, mint and hot peppers are used in their cooking. Typical meals include soups, curries, fried fish, stir fried vegetables and noodles. Some dessert recipes use tropical fruits such as bananas, mangoes, oranges, papayas and pineapples. Fermented palm juice is the local alcoholic drink.
