Bangladesh

Earlier known as East Pakistan, Bangladesh lies to the east of India, sharing its borders with Myanmar (Burma). While the capital of Bangladesh is Dhaka, Chittagong is the main port. The Ganges and the Brahmaputra, two of Asia's greatest rivers, join together north of Dhaka and flow out to sea in the world's largest estuarine delta. The coastal mangrove forests are the largest of their kind in the world. This flat and low lying delta country lies on a major geological fault line and has suffered seven significant earthquakes in the 20th century. The entire region, on an average is struck by a major cyclone every three years and goes through regular flooding caused by monsoon rains and melting snows from the Himalayas.

After India became independent in 1947 gaining freedom from British rule, the Muslim League demanded a separate Muslim state which led to the creation of Pakistan. Pakistan was made up of two separate countries: West Pakistan and East Pakistan. The first step towards independence for East Pakistan was the Language Movement of 1952 which aimed to recognize Bangla as a state language. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as the Father of the Nation, put forward his six points which in effect were the original pillars for East Pakistan's future independence. After a period of civil unrest and civil war, Bangladesh became a separate country in 1971.

Though the official language of Bangladesh is Bangla, English is widely spoken especially in business and government. Bangladesh is predominantly a Muslim country; its separation from India as East Pakistan was mainly on religious grounds. Buddhists and Hindus are among the religious minorities.

Fish is the most import part in a Bangladeshi meal. Milk-based desserts, are very popular. Tea is popular throughout Bangladesh. As Bangladesh is a Muslim country, alcoholic drinks are not readily available.
