Bahrain
The Kingdom of Bahrain is a country in the Middle East, consisting of thirty-three small islands in the Persian Gulf. Bahrain is linked to Saudi Arabia by a causeway.
Manama, on Bahrain Island, is the capital city. Bahrain has a desert climate.
The history of the island of Bahrain, the largest island in the archipelago, starts from the Bronze Age. The ancient seaport of Dilmun, which was eventually absorbed into the Mesopotamian civilizations, bears testimony to this. While Islam was brought to the islands in the seventh century AD, the islands came under Persian control at the turn of the century. In the nineteenth century Bahrain signed treaties with Britain which assured British naval protection. Bahrain became independent from Britain in 1971.
Petroleum and oil refining are major contributors to the economy. The country also refines imported oil. Other industries include natural gas, aluminum smelting, construction, shipbuilding and repair, fishing and pearling. The services sector is a significant contributor to the GDP and the economy. This includes commerce, international banking and insurance. In 1986 the King Fahd causeway linked Bahrain to Saudi Arabia leading to an increase in tourism from the mainland.
Though Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken. Other languages used are Farsi, and Urdu. Majority of the people follow Islam.
Traditional cuisine of Bahrain includes lamb, poultry, and fish. Meat and fish dishes are served with rice and salads. Popular foods are pitta bread, houmous, falafels, and shawarma (marinated lamb or chicken cooked on a skewer). Sambousas, crispy pastries with a variety of fillings, are sold in the souks. Arabian coffee is flavored with cardamom.
