Armenian is the official language and the majority of the people are members of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church.
The Armenian appetizer is called a "meze” which consists of a number of small dishes. These include preserved meats, dolmas (stuffed vine leaves), pickled vegetables, feta cheese and dips. Bread, soup and stews are standard Armenian food. Beef, pork and poultry feature as regulars in an Armenian meal. Barbecued meat (khorovatz) is a favorite dish. Rice is used to make pilaf which is also very popular amongst Armenians.
