The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is located in Southern Asia and is bordered by Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China and Pakistan. Kabul is the capital city. Other principal cities include Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-e Sharif.
Today Afghanistan is in dire need to build its infrastructure. Its agricultural sector provides employment for a large percentage of the population. Agricultural products include wheat, vegetables, almonds, walnuts, fruit and opium. Karakul sheep are reared and wool is an important export. Industry is based on agricultural products and raw materials: natural gas, petroleum, coal, copper, iron ore, lead, zinc, salt and precious and semiprecious stones. Industries include cement, fertilizer, soap, furniture, shoes, textiles and hand-woven carpets.
The climate of this land locked country is dry and it has very cold winters, depending on altitude. Kabul has major housing problem, especially since the fall of the Taliban rule, thousands of refugees have landed in this city. The world heritage sites are also labeled as world heritage sites in danger in Afghanistan. Majority of the people are Pashtun, others are Tajik, Hazara and Uzbe. A number of languages are spoken in this country and many people can speak more than one language.

Spicy in nature, Afghan food is normally accompanied by yoghurt and pickles. Rice and naan bread are staple food. Kebabs are very popular. Pilau is a favorite main dish, made with rice, lamb or chicken, carrots and raisins. Dairy products such as cheese and eggs are part of the diet. Vegetables grown are aubergines, carrots, chickpeas, cucumbers, leeks, onions, potatoes, spinach and tomatoes. Tea is a popular drink in Afghanistan.
