Zimbabwe
Bordered by republic of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Mozambique, the Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in Southern Africa. While Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second largest city the capital city is Harare.
Three organizations, namely ZANU (the Zimbabwe African National Union), ZAPU (the Zimbabwe African People’s Union), and UANC, (the United African National Council), fought the independence battle for the country. This was supported by the neighboring African states. Zimbabwe finally gained independence in 1980.
Nearly two thirds of the people of Zimbabwe earn their living through agriculture. Crops include maize, sorghum, wheat, beans, groundnuts, coffee, tea and fruit. Cotton and tobacco are also cultivated. There is mining of coal, copper, gold, nickel and tin which form part of the industrial sector. Other industries are steel, cement, chemicals, fertilizer, wooden products, clothing and footwear, food and beverages. Tourism is on the priority list of the government.
Though English is the official language, Shona and Ndebele (Matabele) are the two most important indigenous languages. The population consists of Christians, Muslim and people who have traditional beliefs. The Europeans living in Zimbabwe have influenced the food habits of the country. Corn and millet however are the staple food, along with cassava, a root vegetable. Soups and stews are supplemented with meat or eaten with "sadza" a traditional dumpling. Beer is brewed locally.
