Uganda
The Republic of Uganda is situated in East Africa and is bordered by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Kampala is the capital city of the country. Uganda came under the attention of the world during the regime of Idi Amin, when thousands of people were killed and several thousand Asians were sent to exile.
Uganda has been inhabited since the Stone Age. The country has witnessed many settlers from the early days – the Bantu people among the first in establishing the Bantu kingdom of Buganda, Ankole and Toro. Arab traders arrived in Uganda in the 1830s and in the 1860s British explorers came looking for the source of the Nile. Missionaries followed and by the end of the 1880s the British East Africa Company was trading in Uganda. The British continued to rule Uganda until independence in 1962. Soon after independence Dr Milton Obote took control of the country. Then in 1971, Obote's military Chief of Staff, Idi Amin, staged a coup exiling Obote to Tanzania. The war between Uganda and Tanzania in 1979 put an end to Amin's reign. Eventually Obote came back to power but was ousted by another coup in 1985.
Uganda has suffered many years of political instability and economic problems, aggravated by the ousting of the Asian community during Amin’s regime. Today, agriculture provides maximum employment to the people. Coffee is the most important cash crop. Other produce includes tea, cassava, potatoes, corn, millet and pulses. Cotton is grown. The country is rich in deposits of copper and cobalt. Industries are steel production, cement, textiles, tobacco, brewing, sugar and food processing. Eco-tourism is the new agenda for the government to improve economy.
Though English is the official language, Luganda, Swahili, other Bantu and Nilotic languages are spoken. Population is a combination of Christians, Muslims and people of indigenous beliefs.
Plantains, maize, millet and sorghum are staple foods in Uganda. People love to et hot food using a lot of spices. In times of drought millet and sorghum are popular as they are relatively easy to cultivate.
Beans, sweet potatoes, yams and cassava are grown. Cassava, a root vegetable, is often made into dumplings. Soups and stews are supplemented with goat's meat, beef and fish. Chicken is also eaten. Sorghum is used to make beer for local consumption.
