The Tunisian Republic is situated in Northern Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Libya and Algeria. Tunis is the capital city and chief port.
Over the centuries, the region has been ruled by Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs and Ottomans. In 1883, the French established a Protectorate over Tunisia. The country became independent in 1956 and a republic was established the following year.
The economy of the country is diverse. It is divided between the agricultural, industrial and the service sectors, the latter earning the maximum. Agricultural products are grain, sugar beets, almonds, citrus fruit, dates, olives and tomatoes. Beef and dairy products are produced. Major industries are petroleum, phosphates, iron ore, textiles, footwear, olive oil and beverages. Tourism is the main source of foreign exchange earning.
While Arabic is the official language in Tunisia, French is also used in commerce. Majority of the people in Tunisia are Muslims, with some Christian and Jewish minorities.
Hot and spicy food is eaten by most Tunisians. Bread, a staple food, is often eaten with a hot dip and olives. Couscous, cooked with vegetables, meat or fish, is the national dish. Brik, thin pastry wrapped around an egg and meat or vegetables, is another popular dish. Vegetables eaten are carrots, chickpeas, onions, okra, peppers, tomatoes and turnips. Rice and semolina are used to make desserts. Baklava is a popular pastry. Drinks are Turkish coffee and mint tea. Boukha and Thibourine are traditional liqueurs.
