Togo
Bordered by the Bight of Benin, Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Benin, the Togolese Republic is in Western Africa. Lome is the capital city. The country is divided into five regions: Centrale, Kara, Maritime, Plateaux and Savanes. This is a long narrow country which spreads across many geographic regions.
During the time of the first World War, French and British troops captured Togoland, after which a League of Nations directive divided the administration of Togoland into two: the French were given the east of the country and Britain had administration of the west. Then in 1957 the British region of Togoland became part of Ghana and the French area of Togoland became self-governing. Togo achieved independence in 1960.
Togo's agricultural sector is the most important contributor to the economy. Much of the working population earns a living from subsistence farming. The country’s cash crops include cotton, cocoa, coffee and soy beans. Food crops are beans, corn, millet, sorghum, cassava, yams and groundnuts. Resources also include phosphates, limestone and marble. Other industries are cement, handicrafts, textiles, agricultural processing and beverages.
There is a substantial interplay of languages in Togo. While French is the official language, Ewe and Mina are the major African languages in the south, and Kabye and Dagomba are the main African languages in the north.
Half of the people in Togo have indigenous beliefs, rest are either Christians or Muslim.
Maize, rice, millet and sorghum are popular foods in Togo. Cassava porridge and fufu, made from yams, are traditional foods. Maize is also ground into a thick paste.
Soups are made from palm nuts and groundnuts. Stews are popular. Hot, spicy sauces accompany meat and fish. Available vegetables are aubergines, cabbage, carrots, green beans, okra, onions, peppers, plantains, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes and sweet yams.
