Did you know that every year runners carry a "freedom torch" across the country of Tanzania from Mount Kilimanjaro to celebrate independence? Known as the United Republic of Tanzania, the East African country includes the islands of Mafia, Pemba, and Zanzibar. Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and the Indian Ocean fall along its borders. While Dodoma is Tanzania's political capital, Dar es Salaam is the commercial capital. The country has ports in Dar-es-Salaam, Mtwara, Tanga and Zanzibar. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is in the northern highlands.

The history of mankind, according to many people, started in Kenya and Tanzania. Over the years, Bantu speaking people and Arab traders had entered the country. After the visit of explorer Vasco Da Gama visited Tanzania, Portuguese controlled much of the East African coast. After the First World War, "Tanzania", known as Tanganyika, was governed by the British which came under the trusteeship of the United Nations after the Second World War. After Tanganyika and Zanzibar became independent in 1961 and 1963 respectively, they united and became the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, soon renamed the United Republic of Tanzania.
