Swaziland

The landlocked Kingdom of Swaziland is situated in southern Africa enjoying a short border with Mozambique. While Mbabane is the administrative capital, Lobamba is the royal and legislative capital.

Though Swaziland has been inhabited for many centuries, the Swazi people did not move to the area until the early 1750s. The Boers began farming activities in Swaziland about a century later. In 1902, the country became a British Protectorate after battles between the Boers and the British. The country ultimately gained independence in 1968. It still has ties with Britain, through membership of the Commonwealth.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy of Swaziland. Crops include sugar, grapefruit, oranges, pineapples, cotton and tobacco. Many farmers grow maize, the staple food of the country. The industrial sector of the country is usually associated with agriculture. Fertilizers, canning factories, soft drink concentrates and confectionery are the prominent industries. Other industries are chemicals, building materials, wood pulp, furniture, electronic goods and clothing. Coal and quarry stone are mined. Tourism and money remitted by Swazi people employed in South Africa are good contributors to the national economy.

Music and dance is an essential part of Swazi culture. An annual event of great importance is the Reed Dance, when young girls participate in a ceremony to honor the Queen Mother of Swaziland.

English and Siswati are both the official languages of Swaziland. Religions followed in Swaziland include those belonging to the Zionist Church, Roman Catholics and Muslim.

Maize is an essential item in Swazi diet. It is eaten, boiled, roasted as corn on the cob, and crushed and ground and made into porridge. Samp (crushed corn) is sometimes eaten with meat, and maize or rice is served with meat stew (goat or game). Sorghum, beans, pumpkin and ground nuts are also eaten as porridge. Soft drinks and beer are produced locally. During the marula harvest, a strong alcoholic drink is made from marula fruit.
