Sudan
Bordered by Egypt, Libya, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and the Red Sea, the Republic of the Sudan is in Northern Africa. Khartoum is the capital. The river Nile and its tributaries flow through the country.
Northern Sudan was under the rule of Turko-Egyptian armies since 1821. A revolt against the Turko-Egyptian administration took place in the early 1880s. British and Egyptian troops regained control of Sudan in 1899. The march towards independence began in 1953 and Sudan became independent in 1956.
Farming is the main contributor towards the national economy and generates maximum employment opportunities. Agricultural products include millet, sorghum, wheat, cassava, bananas, mangoes, papayas, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, sesame, groundnuts (peanuts), gum arabic, and cotton. The industrial sector is small and employs only seven percent of the working population. Oil is a major export item of the country. While Arabic is the official language, there are several other languages spoken: Nubian, Ta Bedawie, dialects of Nilotic, Nilo-Hamitic, Sudanic languages, and English. Majority of the people are Sunni Muslim living in the north and the people who live in the southern part of the country have indigenous beliefs. Christians live mostly in the south and Khartoum.
Staple Sudanese cuisines include millet porridge and mashed fava beans. Bread is also a staple food. Meat stew is eaten. Vegetables available are cabbages, carrots, garlic, okra, onions, peppers, squash, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes. Sudanese coffee is ground with cloves and spices. Wines, made from dates and honey, are produced by non-Islamic communities.
