Somalia
Formerly known as Somali Republic and the Somali Democratic Republic, Somalia, is situated in Eastern Africa, ordered by Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Mogadishu is the capital. Suffering from alternate droughts and floods, Somalia climate is generally hot.
Because of its strategic position in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Somalia has attracted colonization by many nations. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit the area. After the Egyptian and the British colonists, Italy declared the Protectorate of Italian Somaliland in central Somalia (1889). France also colonized parts of the Somali coast, resulting in Somaliland becoming a French Territory in 1946. Following the Second World War, Italian Somaliland became a United Nations Trust Territory administered by Italy. In 1960 the Somali Republic was formed by the Italian and British territories of Somalia.
The most important contributor to Somalia economy is agriculture, offering employment opportunities to over 70% of the people. Many of the people are dependent upon livestock (sheep, goats, cattle and camels) for their livelihood.
Agricultural products are bananas, coconuts, sorghum, maize, rice, beans, sugarcane, sesame seeds and mangoes. Industry and services contribute around 30% to the national income. Light industries include wireless communication, textiles and sugar refining.
While Somali is the official language, there are a few other languages spoken. These are Arabic, Italian and English. The people of Somalia are Sunni Muslims.
Varying according to the region, Somali food includes porridges made from millet and ground maize. Noodles with sauce or rice with sauce and meat are popular. Italian food, such as pasta, is also available. Meals are usually served with flat bread. Vegetables and fruits include beans, cowpeas, onions, squash, tomatoes, bananas, dates, mangoes and papayas.
