Sierra Leone
Music and dance form an essential part of the culture of Sierra Leone, a country situated in West Africa. Their national dance is performed on ceremonial occasions, accompanied by traditional instruments such as the kora (a stringed instrument), the balangi (similar to a xylophone), and bundu drums. Formally known as the Republic of Sierra Leone, it is bordered by the North Atlantic Ocean, Guinea, and Liberia. Freetown is the capital city.
In 1787 the British people who were against the slave trade, established the Province of Freedom - Freetown - for those who had escaped slavery. Freetown became a British Colony in 1808, which later became a British Protectorate in 1896.
In 1961, Sierra Leone achieved independence. Following a change in the Constitution in 1971, the country became a republic.
Sierra Leone's agricultural sector contributes towards half of the country’s economy and employs around two-thirds of the working masses. Agricultural produce includes rice, cassava, bananas, plantains, groundnuts, palm kernels, coffee, and cocoa. In the fishing industry, mackerel, snapper, tuna, shrimp, lobster and crab are the dominant varieties. One of the most important industries in the country is mining, since it has large deposits of diamonds, gold, titanium dioxide, bauxite and iron ore. Other industries are petroleum refining, small commercial ship repair, footwear, textiles, and beverages.
While English is the official language, Krio, an English-based Creole, is spoken in the Freetown area. Majority of the population speak Mende and Temne north along with a number of other languages. More than half of the population in Sierra Leone is follower of Islam, while the rest are divided between indigenous beliefs or are Christians.
Rice accompanied by meat, fish, and vegetables is a staple diet in the country. Soups and stews are popular. Hot peppers, onions, tomatoes and groundnuts are used to make sauces. The cooking medium is palm oil. Fruits include bananas, citrus fruits, guavas, mangoes, papayas and watermelons. Beer, palm wine, and soft drinks are produced locally.
