Nigeria
The Federal Republic of Nigeria is situated in West Africa, bordered by Benin, Niger, Chad, Cameroon and the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic). Abuja is the capital city. Lagos is the former capital. The Niger is the principal river.
In 1861, there was an increase in British trade, which led the annexation of Lagos by Britain. Britain extended the [British] Protectorate of Nigeria till the beginning of the First World War. In 1922 part of the former German colony of Kamerun was added to Nigeria under a League of Nations mandate. The country achieved independence in 1960. the following years was marked by repeated civil wars, political unrest and military rule. The first civilian election was held in 2003.
The industrial sector in Nigeria is the biggest contributor to the economy, with oil as the most important item. Other industries are coal, tin, columbite, timber, rubber, cotton, steel, small commercial ship construction and repair, cement, construction materials, chemicals, fertilizer, ceramics, printing, footwear, textiles and food products. Cultivated food products are cassava, cocoa, maize, millet, rice, peanuts, palm oil, sorghum and yams.

English is the official language. Other languages spoken include Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo (Ibo).
Half of the people in Nigeria are Muslim. The other half is divided between Christians and traditional believers.
The cuisine varies according to regions. While soups, such as pepper soup and vegetable soup, are popular, other dishes include meat and vegetable stews. Gari, crushed and dried cassava, is a traditional food. Maize, rice and groundnuts are part of the diet. Vegetables include beans, carrots, okra, onions, peas, peppers, tomatoes, plantains, sweet potatoes and yams. Palm oil is used in cooking. Tea is a favorite drink, while beer and palm wine are produced locally.
