Mozambique

The Republic of Mozambique is situated in southeast Africa. It is bordered by Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Swaziland and the Mozambique Channel of the Indian Ocean. Maputo is not only the capital city but also a major port.

Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer had arrived in Inhambane, one of Mozambique's oldest towns in 1498. Today, Portuguese architecture is a reminder of Portuguese settlement in the country, centuries ago. The British and the French used to rent Mozambique land for plantations during the years when the country was a Portuguese colony. Ever since the country came under direct Portuguese rule around 1932, Frelimo the Mozambique Liberation Front, began a long struggle for independence. Finally, in 1974 Portugal and Frelimo signed the Lusaka Accord and Mozambique became independent in 1975.

After independence and a long stretch of civil wars, the government introduced a series of economic reforms, which are giving dividends today. Along with foreign aid and investments, the country is back on track. Majority of the people are farmers. Crops include maize, millet, sorghum, cassava, beans, sweet potatoes, sunflowers, groundnuts, cashew nuts, coconuts, citrus and tropical fruits, sugarcane, tea, cotton, sisal and tobacco. Industries are energy, petroleum products, chemicals, fertilizers, aluminum, asbestos, cement, glass, textiles, food, beverages and tobacco. The fishing and tourism industry prosper due to the country’s long coastline. Big game fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling are all major tourist attractions.

Though Portuguese is the official language, English is widely used in business. Other languages spoken include Lomwe, Makhuwa, Sena and Tsonga. Half of the population are either Christians or Muslims. The other half have indigenous beliefs.

The Portuguese have left an indelible impression on the country’s cuisine. While maize and cassava are both made into porridge, stews and soups are popular. Meat and fish, shellfish, such as shrimps and prawns, are eaten. "Piri piri" a hot pepper sauce or marinade is used in meat and fish recipes.
