Mauritania
Fishing along the Atlantic coast attracts many tourists in Mauritania, a country which lies on the Atlantic coast of West Africa and is bordered by the Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali and Senegal. Nouakchott is the country's capital. The Sahara Desert extends across a large part of the country. You can find water in the desert oases and towns such as Atar. Mauritania has only one permanently flowing river: the Senegal. Fishing is important to Mauritania and the country attracts many tourists for sports fishing off the Atlantic coast. Fish common in the area are dolphins, sea bass, rays and sharks.
The Portuguese were the first Europeans to trade in Mauritania in 1445. During the same time, Arabs also started settling in the country. In the nineteenth century the French started controlling Mauritania's trade in gum arabic and slaves. Mauritania became a Republic and independent from France during the end of the ‘50s.
The severe droughts in the 1970s and 80s affected the country’s economy very badly. At the beginning of the twenty-first century oil was discovered. Today it is estimated that Mauritania has one billion barrels of proved reserves. Nearly half of the population lives on agriculture and livestock. It is thus natural that droughts would have a particularly bad effect on the people of Mauritania. Agricultural crops include dates, millet, sorghum, rice, maize, pulses and yams. Some of Mauritania's food supplies have to be imported. Fishing is an important industry and fish are a major export. Manufacturing is on low priority. Fish processing is an important contributor in this sector. Iron ore is an important item for exports. Other items produced are copper, gold, diamonds, phosphates, gypsum, sulfur and salt.
Arabic is the official language although French is also spoken. Nearly everybody in Mauritania is a Muslim.
Rice and fish are the staple food of the people of Mauritania. Meats such as lamb, goat and camel are also eaten.
